As one of the next generation leaders of LIN's M&A team, Kim plays a pivotal role in the M&A team with over a decade of legal experience, having advised large corporations and domestic and international PE firms on high-profile transactions. After graduating from Seoul National University with a double major in psychology and economics and working in Japan and Singapore as a member of the Consumer Strategy Team at P&G's Asia Headquarters, Kim went to Yonsei University School of Law with the goal of becoming an expert advisor for corporate transactions based on his strategy and marketing experience in global companies. He then gained corporate law experience at large law firms such as Kim & Chang and Lee & Ko, where he worked in finance, M&A, and compliance, and was admitted to the U.S. bar in both Illinois and New York the following year after studying at the University of Chicago in 2019. Kim joined LIM last year as a partner in the firm's Corporate, Finance, and M&A team because he wanted to take an active role in driving growth at a young and evolving firm, and he says he's been rewarded by the firm's increased profile over the past year.
Kim's philosophy is that legal advice should help clients make practical business decisions, so he emphasizes communication with C-level executives and advises them not only on risk analysis but also on strategies and implementation plans to address risks, including M&A and financing transactions, PMI, and internal control related to new domestic and international regulations (compliance). Major advisory cases include CJ Group's acquisition of Mars, Turkey's largest movie business, and the sale of Tirtir, a global cushion powerhouse.
Industry insiders describe Kim as a "smart guy" who provides fast and accurate advice and has excellent communication skills. "Due to the nature of our work, we often have to make decisions on deals within a short period of time, and Kim is smart enough to analyze and advise even if he only looks at the documents for a moment," said Sungho Won, deputy CEO of private equity firm ATU Partners. He added, "Kim not only quickly and accurately points out legal risks, but also gives advice on how to eliminate risks and carefully checks contracts." A business executive who has maintained a long relationship with Kim while handling M&A at a large company also expressed strong trust in Kim, saying, "Legal advice can be vague in nature, but Kim gives clear and detailed opinions," and "He not only understands the client's concerns, but also actively finds and suggests unthought-of areas."
Kim expressed his ambition to firmly establish the firm as a mid-sized law firm that helps companies grow by providing high-quality advisory services on par with major law firms to mid-sized companies and startups, and to create a new wave in the hierarchical law firm market by building the brand power of 'LIN.'
